Voices of Change: Mira from Johannesburg, South Africa
"As a child, I’d leave footprints on frost-covered grass while waiting for my school transport. However, as I grew older, this phenomenon became less frequent."
What is your name and where are from?
I’m Mira. Johannesburg, South Africa is my home.
Have you heard the term Climate change?
I heard about climate change mostly from the news and by observing the changes in my immediate environment over time.
What is the climate over there?
The weather patterns and climate that define our city are fantastic. Johannesburg sits at an impressive elevation of 1752.6 meters above sea level. This high altitude contributes to some unique climatic features. Our weather is a delightful balance, it is neither too cold nor too hot. However, exceptions do occur. In 2018, we experienced an unusual summer day when the temperature soared to a scorching 42 degrees Celsius. Winter nights can be chilly, dropping to 1-2 degrees Celsius, but daytime temperatures reach a comfortable 20 degrees Celsius.
Do you guys see any changes in the climate during past few years
Johannesburg’s summer days are characterized by sudden thunderstorms. These storms arrive swiftly, drenching the landscape, and then retreat just as quickly. Imagine a bright morning turning into rain within half an hour, only to reveal sunshine again shortly afterward. While snow is a rarity, I recall witnessing it once when I was 13. Mostly, our winters remain dry, with clear skies. We experience the full spectrum of seasons: spring, summer, autumn, and winter. As a child, I’d leave footprints on frost-covered grass while waiting for my school transport. However, as I grew older, this phenomenon became less frequent. Perhaps the changing temperature patterns influenced this shift.
What does your family think about the climate change?
Usually it is not something that we discuss with our family over dinner or on regular meetings. Moreover, it might be due to the beautiful weather of Johannesburg that it never comes to our discussion that the climate is changing overall at all places around the globe.
What is your opinion on climate change, why does it occur, and what is the main cause?
I’m a good reader and geography and geology are my favourites. Climate change remains a topic of concern. While we may not fully grasp its complexities, I believe human actions play a role. Our planet is undoubtedly getting hotter, and we must take responsibility for our impact. Cape Town, at South Africa’s southern tip, experiences winter rains in contrast to Johannesburg’s dry winters. Durban, on the eastern side, boasts a tropical and humid climate, distinct from both Cape Town and Johannesburg. I believe that reduction in air pollution, protection of our seas from plastic waste, and work toward cleaner energy sources is crucial. The future holds promise if we collectively prioritize our planet’s well-being.
